Bishop Bill's Bulletin
Dear Members of the Diocesan Family
A wonderful few days:
As reported earlier, The Cathedral School is celebrating its centenary this month. The various functions have been wonderful celebrations and in all cases great inspiration. We certainly give thanks to God for the rich history of the School and pray God’s blessing as the school moves into its second century of equipping students for life-long learning.
The Cathedral Art Show:
I have been informed that there are a number of excellent works on display. Please support this venture of the Friends of the Cathedral. The details are attached.
Several parishes have enquired whether they have to change the name of their parish accounts since the new Canon was passed, to remove “Parish” and replace with “Ministry Unit”. The answer is no. Your account name reflects how you are known by your ABN number.
Long Service Leave:
Robin and I leave today for five weeks Long Service Leave. I thank you for your best wishes and the assurance of your prayers. We are catching up with our daughter and family in the USA and then visiting the UK.
The Archdeacon will oversee all the administration of the Diocese and will be in regular contact with Bishop Ron.
I know that you will welcome Bishop Ron and Mrs Katie Williams. Bishop Ron will be in touch with clergy and as I mentioned at the Ministry Day before Synod, this is an opportunity for clergy to meet with someone external to the Diocese to bounce off ministry ideas. Bishop Ron has had a wide- ranging ministry and we are blessed to have him here in the Diocese.
Cursillo is being revamped. There will be a Cursillo next year in the Northern Region. The Cursillo will be for both males and females together, with separate sessions for each gender.
I have written to the people who were involved with Cursillo in the past, letters should be received this week. If you do not receive a letter from me and would like to be involved with the ministry of Cursillo, please contact my PA.
Next year is the twentieth anniversary of Cursillo in the Diocese. More details later in the year. In the meantime, there is an Ultreya at Charters Towers. Please see details attached.
Planning for 2018:
Speaking at a Parish meeting recently about developing a ministry plan (as required by the new Canon) and to plan for their AGM in 2018, I realised that the new canon says that the Ministry Unit AGM is to be held before the last Sunday of March.
In 2018 I am suggesting that all parishes hold their AGM no later than Sunday 18th March. The reason being is that:
Palm Sunday – 25th March, 2018
Good Friday - 30th March, 2018
Easter - 1st April, 2018
There will be Regional Consultations held as follows:
Western Region W/E 21/22 October
Central Region Saturday 28 October
Northern Region (Tablelands) Friday 10 November
Northern Region (Cairns) Saturday 11 November
One of the agenda items will be the new requirements for the Ministry Unit audit. Please note your diary of the above dates. Further details of venue and times will be confirmed in the near future.
Please continue to pray for The Reverend Alan Buckingham. It is hoped that Alan will be discharged from hospital today.
We congratulate The Reverend Robyn Boyd in being awarded a place at the Oxford Summer School of Theology. We pray her time away is a blessing and the seminars are stimulating academically.
Use of Anglican Churches by other denominations:
Simply put, when an Anglican Church is used for worship, including weddings and funerals, an Anglican Priest will conduct the worship according to the rites (or services) of an Anglican Prayer Book.
To vary this, the permission of the Bishop is required. I do carefully consider each request on an individual basis.
I acknowledge in some areas we have ecumenical arrangements. I also acknowledge that there are various other arrangements in some places. Where there are current arrangements we will review each twelve months.
I repeat what I have said many times, there is to be no sound or other equipment placed on the altar, only Bibles and Prayer Books.
Yours in Christ
The Right Reverend William (Bill) Ray
Bishop of North Queensland
