Dear Members of the Diocesan Family,
The recent catastrophic rain event that has engulfed Townsville and the surrounding area, has seen many homes flooded, people evacuated from their homes in the middle of the night and chaos as the water rose.
The Diocese is very grateful for the many messages and offers of support we have received from far and wide.
The Churches in Townsville have come together and are working as one to provide assistance under the leadership of The Rev’d Bruce Cornish from the Uniting Church. A co-ordination committee has been formed to provide relief, counseling and assistance where and when required. My thanks to The Rev’d Clive Brook for his initial response and to the Area Dean the Rev’d Jeff Coop who will be the Liaison Officer for the Diocese on this committee. Monetary donations received by the Diocese will be channeled through this body so that Christians in Townsville can be seen as operating and ministering together in this time of crisis. May I thank Anglican Aid from Sydney and the Archbishop of Brisbane for their support.
Further West it is good to see the dams full and perhaps the end of years of drought in Charters Towers, Pentland, Hughenden , Richmond, Julia Creek , Cloncurry ,Mount Isa , Normanton , Karumba, Croydon, Georgetown and Forsayth. The vast amount of rain has caused great difficulties with already weakened stock and we hope and pray feed can be brought in to alleviate this.
It is a great comfort in Townsville and in the other centres affected by this weather event, to see all the Government agencies, Federal, State and Local come together for the good of the community and to see how compassionate and loving people can be in the face of such adversity.
There is at this time, a good deal to be thankful for and a good deal of things to be asking for, so please pray for the whole situation.
Damage to Churches and Property:
If any Church or property owned by the Diocese has been damaged by the recent weather event please contact Nikki Millar (email@example.com or 4771 4175 option 2, then number 2) in the Registry as soon as possible so the damage can be assessed and a claim lodged. This may be from rain or from the high winds in the North and Torres Strait.
The Registry team has now sent out the invitations to the Consecration of Keith Joseph. Please notify the Registry of numbers as soon as possible. It looks like the Cathedral will be stretched. St Johns Cairns has hired a bus that will depart from Cairns at 11.00am on Sunday 31st March. Please contact St Johns for further information.
Faithfulness in Service Training:
Another reminder of times and venues for training. Please remember this is compulsory for all Licenced Clergy, Churchwardens, Unit Councillors, persons who work with Children and others who have strategic roles in the Diocese.
